Summer Camp
Schedule 2010
The actual cost of attending Flying Deer Summer Camp is indicated by the high end of the sliding scale. Parents are encouraged to pay the actual cost. However, if a family cannot afford it, they may choose to pay anywhere within the range, or apply for financial assistance by downloading a Financial Assistance Application, which includes information about our financial aid policy. FDNC values enrolling children and adults thirsty for nature connections who for financial reasons would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate.
| Cottonwood Camps: Ages 6 to 12 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day |
||
|---|---|---|
| This week lies at the heart and soul of Flying Deer. It is an exciting day camp for children who love to spend time outdoors with friends, learning about the forest and all its valuable teachings: mysterious animal tracks, delicious edible plants, curious insects, shelter, primitive fire-making, and other wilderness skills, not to mention fun songs, games, and stories! We begin and end our day all together with morning and afternoon circles in the Flying Deer tipi, and adventuring throughout the day in clans. Please note that the age range for Cottonwood IV is 6-8. Older campers are invited to the Red-tail Hawk Overnight Adventure; see below. | ||
| Cottonwood Week I | June 14–18 | $200–$250 |
| Cottonwood Week II | June 21–25 | $200–$250 |
| Cottonwood Week III | June 28–July 2 | $200–$250 |
| Cottonwood Week IV (Ages 6-8) | August 2–6 | $200–$250 |
| Otter Slide Camp: Ages 8 to 13 and families who want to join in the fun! |
||
|---|---|---|
| Includes a week of camp for a child and an overnight adventure for one parent and child. For additional family members attending the overnight, add $25 each. For our first four days, campers will encounter exciting challenges and learn some key crafts, including making group shelter, bone tools, earthen containers, bark cordage, and camp meals. From Thursday evening to Friday afternoon, will be our overnight, for which families are invited to join us to experience the joy and wonder of spending time in nature as a “village” community: camping, playing, learning, and relaxing together. | ||
| July 5–9 | $275–$325 | |
| Red-Tail Hawk Weeklong Overnight Adventure: Ages 10 to 13 | ||
|---|---|---|
| Red-Tail Hawks soar to a weeklong immersion in Flying Deer culture, camping for five days and four nights and taking wilderness skills, adventure, and fun to next level. For more information, click here. | ||
| July 12–16 | $400–$475 | |
| Wolf Camp: Ages 10 to 13 | ||
|---|---|---|
| Two small groups of campers led by experienced instructors begin with two days of day camp building our community and developing the knowledge and skills necessary for the journey ahead. On Wednesday morning, we trek into the beautiful Berkshire Mountains, where we climb summits, eat and laugh around campfires, and enjoy the freedom that backpacking provides. Many parts of this trip serve as metaphors for the growth and change present and awaiting in the children’s lives. | ||
| July 19–23 | $300–$375 | |
| Wolf Camp Expedition: Paddle the Adirondacks! Ages 14-18 | ||
|---|---|---|
Flying Deer's first-ever flat-water canoe expedition! Spend four days paddling on the pristine waters of the Adirondacks. No previous canoeing experience necessary. |
||
| July 27–30 | $400–$475 | |
| Survival Outing for Teenage Boys (ages 14 to 18) | ||
|---|---|---|
| When you go camping, your backpack contains four basic resources—shelter, water, fire, and food. Now imagine camping, but intentionally leaving behind one (or more) of those four basic resources. What would you do? How would you find/make substitutes from the land? Do you have the knowledge, but are hungry to hone that knowledge into skill through experience? Then this is the camp for you! | ||
| August 3–5 | $250–$300 | |
| Quest for the Medicine Tree: Ages 7 to 9 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day |
||
|---|---|---|
| Wanted: Heroic kids to adventure into a strange and enchanted land in search of a lost Medicine Tree to help bring healing and balance to the world. Must be willing to venture into unknown magical lands and learn new things. We’ll follow an ancient map into the forgotten lands of ABODIA, a place filled with magic: where trees and animals can talk, where elves and fairies and ogres dwell, and the only place where the secrets of the Medicine Tree can be found. Come be a part of an adventure like no other in this year’s Quest for the Medicine Tree! | ||
| August 16–20 | $250–300 | |
